Midsommar - Land of the Midnight Sun

So for you from the sun-belt I wanted to share that today is the longest day of the year.  You may not notice it so much down in Louisiana but here in Lindesberg, officially a sub-arctic climate zone, we see it clearly.  Today the sun rose at 3:31AM and will set tonight at 10:09PM.  That being said the light from the sun only goes completely dark from around 12:15AM to 1:00AM... I should know... I am sleeping in a tent...

The long days are a result of Sweden's position on the globe.  Lindesberg is at 59 degrees latitude... which corresponds roughly to the upper tip of New Foundland and southern Greenland.  In comparison New Orleans is located at 29 degrees latitude... which is about the same as Morocco or Egypt and Israel across the Atlantic.

And yes... in the wintertime you can pretty much reverse this sunrise / sunset data and see that Lindesberg is a pretty dark place in the winter.

The Swedes (scandinavians, scottish and many other peoples that live in near the arctic circle) celebrate this day as part of the Midsommar (Mid-summer) festival.  Tonight we are going to Ulf Milgård's house at Stora Mellosa for our midsommar party... We will blog more on that once we get back!  Happy Midsommar!

no one in Houston wants the sun to stay up until Midnight. But I do like the pagan teepee pole doodad. Strange to see folks in long sleeves out in the sunlight. Maybe I need to rethink my packing.
